Just recently I read an interesting article about words.  The article spoke about how some words have totally changed their meaning over time. Like the word awful. It actually once meant “awe” “filled” nothing like it is used today.  It made me start thinking about words, and how we use them. We’ll,  anyway. ..Just thinking. ..

This last week I’ve stepped it up a notch on my exercising. I’m walk/running  1-2.5 miles daily, and one day a week I drive to a beautiful hiking area.

Recently, during one of our hikes… We sat on a rock for a break.

My walking companion and I were taking in the beauty, when I heard a child’s voice. I looked around, and noticed that quite a distance ahead a little girl was standing by herself yelling out “I’m tired, I want to go back!”  I then observed two other people. Which turned out to be the mother, and another daughter. They had continued walking slowly. I continued walking and, eventually passed the little girl. I noticed that her mom was just around the bend waiting for her. The mom saw me, was a little embarrassed, and explained that she is trying to help her daughter lose weight. She said some of the kids at school make fun of her. They call her “fat” and other unkind words. So, they started walking, hoping that over the summer her daughter will shed the “extra” weight, and enter 5th grade feeling better about herself. She went on to explain that her daughter gets tired and wants to stop and go back. Give up. The mother said she’s learned that if she just keeps walking. . eventually her daughter catches up. It’s a sort of loving dance the mom has to do for her daughter.

The mother was very discreet about how she spoke about her daughter’s struggle with her weight. And, unbeknownst to me the little girl had meanwhile become charmed by my walking companion. Without much effort, we all just began walking, talking,  laughing together. And,  before we knew it we had reached the top of the mountain.
My walking companion was so excited she kissed my new little friend.
Yes, words are important. What we say, don’t say, and how we act. And, kind words/actions are powerful. They might sometimes even help us to climb mountains.
     Xoxo. ..
