You are a JoY…

Today’s post was inspired by a conversation I had recently with one of my dearest friends. She lives in sunny California. She had mentioned a conversation she recently had with one of her friends in which the question came up “Do you know anyone that is happy with life right now?” My friend told me her reply was “YES, I DO!” and then she mentioned that she right away thought of me. I’ve been thinking about that conversation ever since.

I also don’t know what prompted me to ask the question. but I’ll never forget the answer. Many years ago, I asked my mother, “What was I like as a small child?” She could have answered in any number of ways. I remember being bossy, stubborn, sassy at times, possibly a little spoiled, shy, often friendly…so my mother’s answer took  me by surprise. Without hesitation she replied, “You were a joy.” A joy? No way…not even close to what I was thinking. Over the years I have experienced numerous self-growth classes, read dozens of self-help books, and danced with therapy. All these I believe helped to make me into a more complete person.

However, after my mother’s pronouncement, that as a young child I was already “a joy,” there was an epiphany. I no longer needed to work so hard. What I really had to do instead was, well…..just be myself; be my true self. Let go of all the selective memories and assumptions about how others saw me, because I already was the person I’d been trying so diligently to become.

I was a Joy.
