When Plans Change

Sometimes we don’t need to see the whole road—only the next gentle step forward

Last week, I was reminded how quickly plans can change. I had been preparing for something I was both looking forward to and feeling a little nervous about—an upcoming Meet the Author event at a local bookstore.

It was a small event, part of their summer Art Walk, and I had imagined sharing a bit of my writing and connecting with others in person.

Then life shifted.

I received a phone call letting me know the event had been canceled due to unexpected circumstances. Naturally, I felt disappointed. Even when something brings a little nervous anticipation, there can still be excitement woven into it.

But as I sat with it, I began to see something else.

This season has already asked a lot of me emotionally. I’m preparing for travel, carrying a tender heart, and doing my best to move through these days with presence and grace.

Perhaps this canceled event was not a loss so much as a gentle redirection.

Sometimes life narrows our focus for a reason.

Sometimes what doesn’t happen is just as meaningful as what does.

I’m learning that peace often comes when I stop resisting change and simply trust the unfolding.

For now, I’m choosing to stay present in the ordinary gifts of this season—quiet mornings, errands, time with my husband, and the small routines that steady me.

Life doesn’t always follow our plans.

But there is still goodness here.
