Over the past decade, water has been a steady companion, though always at varying distances. Ten years ago, I lived a mile from the ocean, where the horizon stretched endlessly and the foghorn called across misty mornings. Later, I moved inland, near a river… its gentle current a quieter presence in daily life. Earlier this year, we moved to a townhome overlooking a pond that lies right behind us.
There’s a grandeur to living near the ocean — the vastness, the dramatic skies, the rhythm of the waves. It was awe-inspiring and humbling, though sometimes the water felt distant, more of a backdrop than a daily companion.
The river brought a quieter, gentler presence. I could watch its flow, notice the seasonal changes, and feel connected in a softer, more personal way than the ocean’s drama allowed.
Here at the pond, water is intimate and immediate. Ducks glide by, herons search the edges for breakfast, and even the wind stirs delicate ripples across the surface. Every day brings little moments of life and movement — a daily invitation to pause, to observe, and to breathe in small wonders.

Over time, I’ve realized that living near water isn’t just about proximity or grandeur; it’s about the rhythms it invites us to notice, the quiet gifts it offers each day. From the endless horizon of the ocean to the gentle flow of a river, and now to the intimate life of a pond, each has shaped my sense of home, peace, and presence. With coffee in hand and the pond before me, I begin each day feeling both at home and fully awake to the life around me.

What a beautiful reflection of how water, and living close to bodies of water, has been a gift in your life. I will notice the gifts in my life.
Thank you
