September, a Second New Year

The first week of September is nearly behind us, and already I can feel something shifting.

Maybe it’s the cooler mornings. Maybe it’s the first hint of color appearing in the trees. Or maybe it’s simply something about September itself.

I’ve always thought January gets far too much responsibility.

We arrive at the beginning of a new year believing we should have resolutions and plans and lists of all the things we are going to change. But September feels different to me.

September feels a little like a second New Year.

Only softer.

There is no pressure to reinvent ourselves. No need for dramatic resolutions. Instead, September seems to quietly ask us to notice where we are.

What has this year brought me so far?

What am I ready to leave behind?

And perhaps most importantly:

What do I genuinely want more of in my life?

These days, my answers are surprisingly simple.

More quiet mornings.

More walks where I actually notice what is around me.

More time at home arranging flowers, cooking something comforting, moving a pillow from one chair to another simply because it makes me happy.

More room for creativity.

More trust in the quiet milestones—the ones that don’t necessarily need an announcement or a celebration to make them meaningful.

September has always carried a feeling of beginning for me. Perhaps that comes from my years as a teacher, when September meant freshly sharpened pencils, clean bulletin boards, and the wonderful possibility of a brand-new school year.

Even now, all these years later, I still feel it.

That little sense of possibility.

Autumn itself seems to understand this.

Spring asks us to begin.

Summer invites us to expand.

But autumn feels like a season of gathering.

We begin bringing things inward again—our homes, our routines, our thoughts. We take stock of what has grown and what we want to carry with us into the months ahead.

And I find myself wanting to carry less urgency.

Less comparison.

Less feeling that every meaningful thing must be visible to someone else.

Instead, I want to carry more peace.

More creativity.

More gratitude.

More presence.

There are still four months left in this year—four beautiful “ber” months—and somehow that feels like plenty of time.

Not necessarily to accomplish more.

But perhaps to live more intentionally inside the life I already have.

There are a few things quietly unfolding in my own life right now. A little creative project, in particular, has quietly made its way out into the world. There will be time to share more about that later.

For now, I’m enjoying the sweetness of simply knowing it is there.

Maybe that is part of my September New Year too—learning that not every milestone needs to arrive with trumpets.

Some things can enter our lives softly.

So this September, I’m not making resolutions.

I’m simply paying attention.

To what feels peaceful.

To what feels meaningful.

To what I want more of.

And to the quiet invitation of a new season saying:

You can begin again from right where you are.

Happy Labor Day, sweet friends. I hope this long weekend brings you a little rest, a little beauty, and perhaps even a small sense of beginning again. 🩷
