A Small Change That Made Our Living Room Feel New Again

A week or so before my husband and I were having friends over for a Saturday evening meal, I found myself doing what I often do when company is coming — looking around the house and imagining little ways I might make things feel just a bit cozier.

I had already been thinking about what I would serve and how I would set the table, but somewhere along the way my attention wandered to the living room. What began as a simple furniture move soon felt like a small living room makeover — without buying anything new.

And then I looked at the sofa.

I had moved that sofa several times since we moved into our townhome, trying to find the arrangement that made the most sense in a room that can sometimes be a little challenging. Between the windows, the piano, the walkway and the adjoining kitchen, there are only so many places everything can go.

But suddenly I wondered, What if I put the sofa in front of the window?

It was one of the few positions I hadn’t really tried.

So, of course, I moved it.

Almost immediately, the room felt different.

From the sofa, I could look out toward the pond, and somehow the whole space seemed to open up. Instead of feeling as though the sofa was simply sitting in the room, it began to create its own little area — a comfortable place to sit, read, have coffee or simply watch what was happening outside.

I placed my small Serena & Lily bar cart behind it, and that simple addition seemed to finish the arrangement. For our dinner with friends, I moved the small dining table slightly and created a cozy little setting that felt relaxed and welcoming.

And the funny thing is, none of this had been part of the plan.

I was simply preparing for an ordinary Saturday evening meal.

Yet sometimes that is how our favorite changes happen.

Not because we set out to completely redecorate a room, but because we move one thing, see the space differently, and suddenly wonder why we hadn’t tried it before.

Living in a smaller townhome has reminded me that a home doesn’t have to stay exactly the same. In fact, I think homes evolve right along with us.

We move things. We edit. We try something new. We live with it for a while.

And sometimes a very small change allows us to appreciate something that was there all along — in my case, a beautiful view just beyond the window.

For now, though, I think the sofa may finally have found one of its favorite places.

And so have I.
