Some summers are filled with airline tickets, sightseeing, and carefully planned itineraries.
Mine has been much quieter.
There was one brief trip to California this summer to celebrate the life of a dear friend. While I was there, I managed to steal away for a few happy hours at Disneyland before returning home. It was a bittersweet journey that reminded me how closely joy and grief can sometimes walk hand in hand.
Beyond that, this season has been wonderfully rooted in the everyday rhythms of home.
And if I’m honest, I think that’s exactly what I needed.
There’s been a gentle rhythm to this summer—one that hasn’t asked me to rush anywhere or become anyone different than I already am.
Most mornings begin with a cup of coffee, my devotional readings, and a few peaceful moments before the day unfolds. Those quiet beginnings have become one of my favorite parts of summer. They gently remind me that a beautiful day doesn’t have to begin with a busy schedule. Sometimes it simply begins with gratitude.
From there, life quietly carries on.
Some mornings I’ve climbed onto my little blue bicycle and pedaled around the pond, waving to neighbors, watching ducks glide across the water, and breathing in the cool Oregon air. Those simple rides have become one of my favorite ways to begin the day.

One Saturday morning, while riding my bike, I happened upon the loveliest neighborhood garage sale. It was one of those serendipitous discoveries that couldn’t have been planned. I came home with a few beautiful baskets in perfect condition—small treasures that now make me smile each time I pass them. It’s funny how the simplest surprises often become our favorite memories.
Other mornings have taken me to our weekly walking group, where conversation seems to flow as naturally as the trails beneath our feet. We’ve explored familiar paths, shared stories along the way, and been reminded that friendship often grows one walk at a time. I’ve also enjoyed our yoga classes, though every now and then my husband and I have decided to skip one in favor of simply listening to what the day seemed to be asking of us instead.
My husband and I have also become regulars at the movie theater this summer, enjoying everything from animated adventures to classic summer blockbusters. There’s something delightfully old-fashioned about sharing popcorn, lingering over lunch afterward, and making an afternoon of it.
One afternoon I finally gave in to the temptation I’d been resisting all summer and stepped into our local family-owned candy and ice cream shop. I’d been wanting to stop for weeks, and I’m so glad I finally did. My hand-dipped ice cream disappeared far too quickly, but the memory of that little summertime treat has lingered much longer.
Back here at the cottage, I’ve found myself enjoying simple meals more than ever.
A favorite pasta.
A hearty sandwich.
Fresh fruit.
A colorful salad.
Nothing elaborate.
Just food prepared slowly enough to savor.
I’ve discovered that some of life’s sweetest pleasures don’t require a special occasion. They simply ask us to pay attention.

This summer has also brought unexpected gifts in the form of new neighbors. Watching moving trucks arrive, introducing ourselves across the courtyard, and exchanging those first friendly conversations has reminded me that every new beginning starts with a simple hello. It’s been such a pleasure getting to know them, and I’m looking forward to seeing those friendships unfold in their own time.
And then there are the moments I never could have planned.
Sitting quietly on the terrace one afternoon, I looked up just in time to see a hummingbird flutter to the feeder. For a few precious moments, everything else faded into the background. It lingered just long enough to remind me that life’s sweetest gifts often arrive when we’re simply paying attention.

Of course, much of my summer has also been spent writing.
Monday mornings continue to find me here, sharing these little glimpses of cottage life with you. Between blog posts, journal pages, and putting the finishing touches on my newest novella, I’ve realized that writing isn’t simply something I do. It’s one of the ways I slow down long enough to notice the beauty around me.
As I was finishing this essay, my husband suggested we take a drive to the Oregon coast for lunch.

Originally, we’d planned one destination, but as the day unfolded, we found ourselves happily changing our minds, following the coastline a little farther, lingering over lunch by the water, and simply enjoying wherever the road decided to take us.
It felt like the perfect ending to this season.
Not because it was a grand adventure, but because it reflected everything this summer has quietly been teaching me—that some of life’s sweetest days aren’t the ones we carefully plan. They’re the ones we simply say yes to.
When I stop to think about it, there isn’t one single event that defines this summer.
No grand adventure.
No carefully planned itinerary.
Just a season filled with simple days that quietly became beautiful memories.
Morning coffee.
Bike rides around the pond.
Neighborhood walks.
Movie afternoons.
A hand-dipped ice cream.
Simple meals.
Fresh flowers on the table.
Friendly new neighbors.
A hummingbird at the feeder.
A spontaneous drive to the coast.
Evenings on the terrace.
The older I become, the more I realize that happiness rarely arrives all at once.
It settles quietly into our everyday routines.
Into familiar places.
Into the people we share them with.
Into ordinary moments that slowly become the memories we’ll treasure most.
Perhaps that’s what this summer has been teaching me all along.
Joy doesn’t always announce itself with fireworks or faraway destinations.
Sometimes it arrives quietly, tucked inside the gentle rhythm of everyday life.
And when we pause long enough to notice, we discover that what once seemed ordinary has been quietly becoming extraordinary all along.
As I look ahead to the changing seasons, I know summer won’t last forever. But I hope I’ll carry its gentle rhythm with me long after the warm afternoons have given way to autumn.
Thank you for spending a few moments here at the cottage today. Wherever this season finds you, I hope you’re discovering little pockets of joy tucked into the everyday moments around you.

With gratitude,
Marcia

Donna, my dear friend, thank you!I do feel very fortunate to have so many lovely places to walk right outside my door. And I love that after 26 years, you can still look around and see all the reasons to be happy right where you are—that really is what it’s all about, isn’t it?
