Coming Home to Routine

There’s a quiet sweetness to coming home — the kind that greets you at the door before the suitcases are even unpacked.

After days of travel and ferry crossings, hotel keys and cobblestone streets, I find myself breathing deeper the moment we walk back into our townhome. The familiar scent of coffee, the soft rustle of the trees by the pond, and that instant sense of belonging that only home can hold.

Camille’s joyful twirls, Anastasia’s slow stretch in a patch of morning light — these small homecomings are perhaps my favorite part of any journey. They remind me that travel isn’t just about where we go; it’s about how we return.

This first week home is always tender. The rhythm takes time to find again — laundry humming in the background, suitcases half-unpacked, groceries to restock. Yet, tucked inside all that motion is a kind of grace. Life whispering, slow down… ease back in.

I make a pot of tea, open my journal, and begin to gather thoughts from the trip — the ferry lights on the water, the laughter of friends, the quiet charm of the Jared Coffin House. And while the pages fill slowly, I realize that what I brought home can’t be packed away: perspective, gratitude, and the calm that lingers after time spent near the sea.

As I return to volunteering, book studies, and morning walks by the pond, I carry that coastal calm with me — a reminder that even here, in the simple rhythm of daily life, there are tides that rise and fall, and moments that shimmer quietly like sunlight on the water.

Today I’m grateful for the beauty of returning — and the peace of finding home waiting, just as we left it.

Marcia’s Mc-Style Egg Sandwich

Serves: 1  Time: 5–7 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 egg
  • 1 English muffin (or small roll, croissant, or toast)
  • 1 slice of cheese (American, cheddar, or Swiss)
  • 1 slice of ham, turkey, or cooked bacon (optional)
  • A dab of butter or a drizzle of olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Toast your muffin:
Split and lightly toast both halves. You can butter them if you like a golden edge.
  2. Cook the egg:
    • Warm a small nonstick skillet over medium heat.
    • Add butter or oil.
    • Crack the egg into the pan (or use an egg ring if you want the perfect round shape).
    • Sprinkle a little salt and pepper.
    • Cover with a lid for 1–2 minutes until the white is set and the yolk is still slightly soft—or cook longer if you prefer it firm.
  3. Add cheese & warm through:
    • Place the cheese on top of the egg while still in the pan for a few seconds to melt.
    • Add your ham or bacon slice if you’re using one and warm it slightly.
  4. Assemble:
    • Place the cheesy egg on the toasted muffin bottom, top with the other half, and press gently.
  5. Optional touch:
    • Wrap in parchment or foil for a few minutes to let the cheese melt perfectly—just like a café breakfast sandwich.

☕️ Serving suggestion

Enjoy with your morning coffee or tea and maybe a small side of fruit.
You could even sit by your favorite window and ease into your plans for an adventurous day.
