A December Soiree with Friends

There are moments in a new chapter of life when something quietly clicks into place — a feeling, a friendship, a memory in the making. Today was one of those moments.

This afternoon, I welcomed a small circle of my walking friends — the sweet ladies of the Townscapers — into our home for a little holiday soirée. Though not everyone could be here, this group has been a gentle, steady blessing since I moved into my new home last spring.
They were among the very first friends I met after arriving, and our weekly walks quickly became something I looked forward to — simple, grounding, and filled with the kind of companionship that unfolds naturally when you’re side-by-side under the trees.

Over time, these walks led to invitations to luncheons, studies, book groups, and other small gatherings. Even though I’m not part of their church community, they welcomed me with such warmth and openness. From those early spring mornings to the crisp autumn paths, this little group has become a lovely constant in my week.

So inviting them over today felt extra meaningful — a way to say thank you, and also a way to continue a tradition that has lived in my heart for more than 30 years.

For over three decades — from my years in California, to the coastal towns I’ve called home, and now to this current chapter — I’ve held some form of a December tea or holiday gathering. Sometimes it’s been a bustling house full of friends, and other times it’s been one person seated across a cozy table.

The size has never mattered.
The intention always has.

There is something about the very beginning of December that calls to me — the quiet joy, the anticipation, the soft unfolding of the season. Hosting a little tea feels like opening the door to Christmas in the gentlest and most heartfelt way.

And today continued that tradition so beautifully.

I ordered a lovely assortment of scones and treats from a local French bakery — each one delicious and so pretty on my Christmas china and tiered plates.
We sipped holiday tea and warm wassail from my festive drink dispenser (complete with a bow I couldn’t resist adding), and we chatted and laughed until our conversations began overlapping in that happy way that happens among women who enjoy one another’s company.

I had set up a little craft as a possibility… but we never quite made it to that part — we were far too busy talking!
Perhaps next year.

And one of the happiest surprises of the day?
My husband made a little cameo appearance and finally had the chance to meet everyone. Watching those introductions made my heart feel especially full.

With the soft winter light pouring in, the tree twinkling in the background, and the table set with holiday china, the whole afternoon felt cozy, joyful, and quietly celebratory — a sweet beginning to the season.

Each detail was simple… and yet somehow perfect.

As the afternoon drifted into early evening and the last friend left, I felt so grateful — grateful for this home, this season, these friendships, and the old traditions that continue to shape my life in such sweet ways.

Sometimes joy comes quietly.
Sometimes it comes in a group of women walking the same path — both literally and figuratively.
And sometimes it comes in a simple December tea that reminds you you’re right where you’re meant to be.

Thank you for sharing this moment with me
Here’s to a beautiful, hope-filled, heart-full start to the Christmas season.
