As Christmas draws near, I find myself returning again and again to simplicity—classic colors, familiar textures, and small details that quietly say welcome. This year, that sense of return has shown up most clearly in our small courtyard, the very first space that greets us—and our guests—before the door ever opens.

Living in a townhome has changed how I think about decorating. The courtyard is smaller than entrances I’ve had in the past, but in many ways, that has made it easier to approach with intention. Fewer choices, fewer layers, and more room to let each piece matter.

This season, I was drawn to what many are calling a “Ralph Lauren–inspired” Christmas—traditional reds and greens, pine, ribbon, and timeless patterns. To me, it feels less like a trend and more like a return. These are colors and textures that feel rooted in memory rather than novelty, borrowed from winters past and carried forward with ease.

The transformation itself was simple. A pine wreath on the door—one I can use again next year. A few ribbon accents that will be carefully folded away for another season. Pillow covers in classic patterns that instantly warmed the space without replacing what we already had. Nothing extravagant. Nothing temporary. Just enough to create a feeling.
And that feeling is what matters most.
I’ve always loved creating an inviting entrance. There’s something meaningful about preparing a space before someone arrives, about saying you’re welcome here without words. In this smaller courtyard, that intention feels even more tender. The scale invites closeness. The simplicity invites calm.

As the days grow quieter and Christmas approaches, I’m reminded that welcome doesn’t have to be grand. It can be thoughtful. It can be lasting. It can be as small as a wreath, a ribbon, and a space that feels ready to receive.
This little courtyard has become my way of greeting the season—simple, traditional, and meant to last. And in this chapter of life, that feels like enough.
Grateful for small spaces, familiar colors, and the joy of welcome.

What a thoughtful way of welcoming your guests by saying ‘ you’re welcome here’ before they enter! You seemed to have quite achieved that as displayed in your photos!
Thank you and Happy Holidays!
